Kabankalan '11: Sinulog Festival 2011

Yesterday, I went to Kabankalan City with my nieces for the Sinulog Festival 2011. I was supposed to celebrate Sinulog Festival in Cebu City, unfortunately I got sick after the holiday season and I wasn’t up for it as I need to rest. Instead, I decided to go to Kabankalan.

Sinulog Festival 2011 Kabankalan

Sinulog festival is a celebration in honor for the Baby Jesus (Santo Nino) for helping the people in driving away the Moro Pirates.

When we arrived around 10:30AM, we saw Chris & Chad so we joined forces with them and we went directly to the plaza to watch the streetdance. So off we go, armed with our can of sooth (evil grin). Yes, we came prepared.

Well, the streetdance had started already so it was really crowded and we kind of had a hard time looking for a perfect place to watch and take photos. But, along the way, we found a small gap in the crowd so we pushed ourselves in the front and sort of went on the street to join in the dance while taking pictures. It was really a fun-filled festival as you can see dancers covered in sooth, garbed in colourful costumes and dancing their hearts out to the beat of the drums. Not only that, everyone were all covered in sooth and if not, somebody will wipe it in your face. There were some who used latex paint instead of sooth, just to add color in your face. Well, if you’re not into this thing, sorry this festival is not for you for you really don’t have a choice but to smile instead and join in the merry-making. Don’t be a kill joy. Even the Koreans, Americans and European guests joined in putting sooth to the passerby so if you are not into it just stay home ok?

This is my second time to celebrate Sinulog Festival with the people of Kabankalan. And as always, I had such a great time. We went home very wet as it rained hard in the afternoon and covered in sooth but with big smiles on our faces.

Well, Kabankalan Sinulog Festival may not be as grand as the one celebrated in Cebu but mind you it was really one heck of a festival as everyone went home with a smile on their sooth covered faces. Well all-in-all this year Sinulog festival really improved a lot as more tribe joined the streetdance competition, more tourist both local and foreigners alike, and security wise it was 2 thumbs up for there were many police and army in the area.
