The masks making competition was held last Oct.2 at the Fountain Area of Robinson’s place and I was supposed to cover it but due to some important things I wasn’t able to go their or during the opening of the Village last Monday. But I’m happy to say that I was able to visit the Masskara Village yesterday and for 4 straight years out of 5.

Anyways, if you haven’t visited the MassKara Village yet don’t fret! As you still have until October 21, 2011 before the exhibit ends.

I had a great time last 13th Panaad sa Negros Festival that was held last April 4-9, 2011 in Panaad Park in Bacolod City. All participated by the 31 municipalities and cities of Negros Occidental that showcased different festival in one venue, therefore, it was later on called as the “Mother of all Festivals”. Each had their very own respective booths that exhibits local home-grown and home-made products. From livestocks and agricultural crops to local delicacies, weaved mats and bags, accessories, furnitures and even arts. You named it, they have it.

It was past four in the afternoon when I arrived in Panaad Park giving me ample time to check out the different booths while there is still light. I said to myself, I will be done in an hour or two then I can head home. Time really fly so fast when you are enjoying. I didn’t noticed that it was already 7:00 p.m., it took me three hours hopping from one booth to another. Hey! I hadn’t missed one booth, I had pictured, entered, and check what’s in it.

My favourite booths are: The Dakbanwang Silay of Silay City; because it displays the old world, old stuffs and it’s very interactive. They had human actors acting as priests and Katipuneros which I find very creative.
Balay Bacolodnon of Bacolod City; where they had contemporary furnitures displayed. I instantly fell in love with the modern floor lamps made of “capis shell” designed by a local Bacolodnon. Very stylish and very world class quality.

Then it was time to go home. The place is already getting crowded and my feet is screaming for a little rest. On my way home, I cant get off my mind a contemporary table lamp made of local shell I saw in Bago City’s booth. It would probably look good in our living area or the bedroom. But then again, I was there for the visit, not for shopping.

Panaad a Hiligaynon term which means “vow” or “promise” is a celebration of thanksgiving in exchange of a good life.

Panaad Festival, the “Mother of all Festivals“, showcases the history, culture, trade, agriculture, tourism, festivals and the best of what the cities and municipalities of Negros Occidental has to offer.

Well, last April 4, was the kicked off of the 18th Panaad sa Negros Festival and I was able to witnessed the said event with my friends. The highlight that day was the “Best of Festival Dances” competition were in 24 groups garbed in colorful costumes danced their hearts out to covet the title of the “Best Festival Dance” in Negros Occidental. And the winning group who went home with the title was the Bailes de Luces of La Castellana. Well, it’s a hands down to them for they really wowed the crowds with their performance.

Tigkalalag Festival of Isabela (3rd placer)

Aside from the “Best of Festival Dances” competition, the Lin-ay sang Negros 2011 candidates were also presented and special performances were also given by the Bacolod Masskara Festival and the Bacolaodiat Festival.

For most, especially me *smiles*, Panaad sa Negros means a hearty stomach as each City/Municipality pavilions offers delicious food. So yummy!!! We mostly hang-out at the Manapla pavilion for their famous and yummy puto cheese. And of course who could resist not having oysters for dinner? Or tasty diwal, shrimps and alimango (crabs)? Well, not us definitely.

Panaad sa Negros will commenced on April 9, 2011 so you still have more than 2 days to visit, enjoy and discover what Negros has to offer.

I’ve been to Victorias City for an nth times already, for I have friends and relatives who live there., as well as, it’s just along the way going to my parents house. But last Monday, March 21, was my first time to join the city in celebrating the Kadalag-an Festival.

Kadalag-an Festival is held to commemorate the conversion of Victorias from a municipality into a component city. Kadalag-an or “victory” symbolizes the victories achieved by the local people against adversities in life.

The funny thing was, a friend asked me what the festival is and I was like ” Uhmm….” then nothing. Gosh! I don’t even have an inkling what their festival is called and that all along I thought it was just a simple town fiesta. Pfft! Where was I all this years? Earth to Audrey. How can it be a simple town fiesta when it is a city?

Anyways, I was really surprise on how good Kadalag-an Festival is and how crowded even though it was not promoted well. The main street were filled with spectators and dancers garbed in colorful costumes dancing their hearts out. There were 13 groups all in all who joined the street dance competition and each group is composed of 2 or 3 baranggays. Everyone really did well but of course we have our favorite group (Brgy. 15 & 15A) and we cheered hard for them. Well, maybe we were a little bias as we are friends with the choreographer and sponsor. But in all fairness I could say that they were really good.

All-in-all Kadalag-an Festival was a blast! Well, it may not be as big and grand as the other festivals but it has a potential. All it need is a vast tourism promotion. Anyways, I really had a great time in Kadalag-an. It was worth braving the scorching heat at midday and having sunburns. Opps! Not only that, we were also drenched in the rain at the start of the parade. As we all know rain or shine the show most go on. *smiles* Well, until next Kadalag-an Festival everyone!

with Eyya at Kadalag-an Festival

Last Saturday, March 19, I went to Sagay City with Eyya to witness the 15th Sinigayan Festival. The name was derived from a hard semi-spherical shell called “Sigay” which is abundant on the shores of Sagay.

Well, it was not my first time to celebrate the festivity with the Sagaynon as I was also here last year with my nephew. But it’s my first time to witness the “Sinigay sa Sagay” Mardi gras as we were on a food trip last time. So, I was really excited that I even planned on staying in Sagay for 3days. But due to family obligations the plan didn’t materialized.

Anyways, we arrived in Sagay around 12:45PM, after 2 hours and a half bus ride, the longest bus ride I ever had going there. After arriving, we directly went to Tali-ambong Food Village for a hearty lunch as our tummy was growling badly. We went from kiosk to kiosk in search of something uniquely Sagay but ended up with a big slab of pork liempo and chicken liver. Huh! So much for something interesting and unique.

Well, after lunch we waited for Eric to arrive as he was coming from Victorias City and waited for him to finish his lunch while munching on Squid Curls. Then off we went in search of the assembly area.

The festival theme was centered on the preservation and protection of the environment. So, one could see a lot of recycled materials in the tribes costumes and headdresses like straws, cups, plastic bags and a lot more. There were thirteen tribes all-in-all who participated in the mardi gras dancing to the beat of the drums and also the people around. Well, there were a lot of drum beaters that it’s kinda hard to know the exact festival beat. And guess what? Even the dancers got confused, especially near the assembly area. It was really funny.

All-in-all the festival was a so, so for me. I guess I was expecting a lot from it since it was promoted really well. Something was missing in the street dance competition as; it doesn’t have a WOW factor. Of course, besides the ending were all the 13 tribes danced as one to the beat of the drums and also to show everyone that Sagay is united in preserving and protecting the environment . Well, just a suggestion to the local government, please give more importance to the Mardigras as it’s the highlight and so that they want have crabby costumes and headdresses next time. Well, in all fairness Sagay’s food are really yummy! I so love the Squid Curls and the seafood. And I just hope I could experience the Himoga-an River Cruise next time. *smiles*
